Family Update Nov 21, 201

November 21, 2021

As we move into the Thanksgiving season, I want to take a minute to thank everyone for stepping up and stepping in to help support Windom Community School as we grow as a new community.  Things were a little bumpy in the beginning, but we’ve persevered and pushed through and we’re on the way to making Windom an amazing place.  I want to give a special thanks to the teachers and support staff who have tirelessly put forth the effort to make your students’ school experience one that is engaging and successful.  It’s a short week but lots of notes!

Windom CARES:

As we build our community, the staff have come up with schoolwide expectations and values, including an acronym for what we want to see in ourselves and our students.  Windom CARES.  C-cooperation and collaboration (we will work together), A-assertiveness (we will advocate for ourselves and others), R-respect and responsibility (we will be respectful make good choices), E-empathy (we will understand others feelings), S-self control (we will think before we speak and/or act).  Your students will begin to hear these consistently across the building and we will work to celebrate those who exhibit our CARES values.

PJ’s on Tuesday:

I met with our new student council this week, made up of 4th and 5th graders, and we discussed many ways we can make Windom “the best school ever”.  One of those ways, of course, is by designing Spirit Week events.  They decided that since this was a short week, we should wait on a Spirit Week, but that we should always have a PJ day the day before a long break, and I think that sounds like a lovely idea.  So, let’s ALL wear PJ’s on Tuesday!  (More about the student council in future updates)

Picture Day:

Our scheduled picture day is Monday, November 29th.  The make-up day is currently scheduled for December 10th, but they may need to reschedule to January.  I’ll let you know as soon as I have confirmation.  If you’d like to volunteer during picture day, you can send an email to windompto@gmail.com to sign up.

Parent Pickup:

When the weather turns cold, we will be moving WALKING parent pickup to the gym.  Since it is forecasted to be in the 40’s for the next 2 weeks we will stay at the park.  Look for the change to happen the week of December 6th.  Don’t worry, will remind you.

Notes From the PTO:

A huge thank you to all who contributed to the Sabathani food and supply drive. Windom collected over 1,000 items that will help keep our community fed and warm this winter.  We also supplied the school nurse and social worker with a large supply of extra clothes and winter wear. Working together we can create a big impact! A special THANK YOU goes out to room 204 for winning the classroom competition by gathering 188 items!

The good doesn't stop there.  Last week's FUN RUN generated $25,562 and Give to the Max donations added an additional $3,700 for the PTO.  With these new funds, the PTO can start to plan out how best to support our students and teachers.

Now through early January, parent Kim Oatman and the PTO have organized a shoe drive. We are collecting gently worn adult and kids shoes, including sneakers, boots, dress shoes, sandals, water shoes, cleats, slippers, etc!  This Tuesday Kim will be collecting for Shoesday Tuesday at drive-up pick-up and drop-off this Tuesday, Nov. 23.  There are also two neighborhood drop offs at 5623 Garfield Ave and 5700 13th Ave. S.  See the Shoe Drive Flyer for more details.

Adult t-shirt designs have been created to help celebrate our new community.  There are so many great designs.  Please vote for your favorite design so we know how to move forward.  Click on T-shirt designs to see them.  Vote/rank your favorite designs here:  Rank your preference.

I think that’s it.  Remember, NO SCHOOL on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.  I hope you have a nice break.  If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to reach out at Eric.Loichle@mpls.k12.mn.us or 612-668-3371.
